Olympic Game Time ~ Tea Time at Steeped in Style Teas

As you know, the 2008 Summer Olympics are being held in Beijing, China. Many tea fans have taken notice of the Olympic Games because, not only is tea the drink of choice among the Chinese, but China is where many of our favorite teas are grown.

In celebration of the games, Coca-Cola, an Olympic game sponsor and the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee unveiled specially-produced cakes of Pu-Erh tea. Olympic sponsored Pu'Erh tea is limited in quantity as only 50,000 sets have been authorized for sale. These tea leaves were originally grown in the Yunnan Province along the Lancang River, and underwent specific, traditional methods of refinement before being packaged. Among all the teas that China does produce, Pu-Erh was chosen, with the hope that the Olympics can help promote this unique tea (either you love it or hate it!) and it's health benefits to the international community.

The spirit of Chinese tea conforms to the Olympic ideals of peace and respect. The Beijing 2008 Olympic Games provide a rare opportunity for the development of Chinese tea, and allow the world a better chance to understand a special part of Chinese culture.

So, although Pu-Erh may be a little too strong for many western tastebuds, pour yourself a cup of one of our gourmet teas, sit back and enjoy as you cheer for the USA to bring home the gold!

Go Team USA!! ~ Amy

Want the Perfect Cup of Tea ~ Watch out for the Water!

Beware of the water! Using good water is crucial to the perfect cup of tea.

Ideally, tea should be made with natural spring water with a high mineral content. If you have no choice but to use tap water, make sure to let it run for at least 30 seconds to make sure it is fresh. If you have chlorinated tap water, it should be left standing for an hour or two to let the chlorine escape. Otherwise it can adversely affect the taste of the tea.

Go Green with Dragon's Well or Lung-Ching

As you know, tea is a very important component of Chinese daily life. With hundreds of different varieties to choose from, the Chinese favored Dragon's Well (also known as Lung-Ching) and have made it the most widely consumed green tea. Here's a little more info:
Dragon's Well has four distinct characteristics: 1) flat leaves; 2) jade green color; 3) soft and mellow flavor; and 4) sweet, fresh aroma. The mellow flavor of Dragon's Well keeps it from turning bitter - even if it is over steeped. During production, Dragon's Well is pan fried and dried under a wood-fired wok; this helps remove the green, grassy taste. The Chinese also believe that Dragon's Well has a cooling effect - a perfect tea for the spring and summer seasons!

Dragon's Well and other green teas are produced in such a way that they contain the highest content of antioxidant compounds - therefore they help fight against certain cancers, lower cholesterol levels and blood pressure, reduce the likely-hood of getting the flu and other infections and helps reduce the signs of aging.

Try our green tea - we think you'll love the mellow, sweet taste - not to mention enjoying a long list of health benefits! Choose from Dragon's Well, Green Caramel, Gunpowder Mint or Wild Blueberry!

The Ultimate Jumpstart to your Diet ~ Drink Tea!

According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, "green tea consumption produced a significant 4% increase in 24-hour energy expenditure. If you consume 2,000 calories per day and don't gain or lose weight (you're in energy balance), an increase of 4% would translate roughly into an 80-calorie daily difference. Over a year, this could result in 89 pounds of weight loss." Going green (tea that is) could be the ultimate jumpstart to your diet plan!

Interestingly the tea you purchase from a grocery store shelf may not contain the key ingredients of green tea you are looking for. Most mass production tea is made with lower quality tea - tea dust if you may. Just for kicks, after I brewed my Steeped in Style tea this afternoon, I tore open the teabag (left side of picture). Then I tore open a teabag I had received from a leading tea company (right side). This is the picture I took. What you see is what you get. If you are going to fuel your body, do it with the best possible tea products. The bottom line is your body will thank you in the long run.

Go green ~ Amy

It's only natural to feel this good ~ Oolong or Wu Long?

Wu Long tea? Chances are you know this tea by another name. Wu Long tea is more commonly referred to as oolong tea! You may find that people promoting oolong tea as a weight loss product are tending to refer to it as Wu Long. Regardless of which is name is used, the fact of the matter is that this extraordinary tea is catching on because of some fascinating health benefits and not just for the wonderful robust flavor that it has been known for in the past.

Recent research has shown that oolong teas have been found to have the same capabilities to jump start a sluggish metabolism that are found in green tea. However, oolong tends to produce roughly twice the difference in metabolic rates and has about half the amount of caffeine found in green tea. Oolong (or wu long) might just be what you have been looking for!

Steeped in Style is happy to offer you a wonderful Oolong Peach loose leaf tea! Continue to exercise and watch what you eat, but add a delicious cup of tea to your daily routine. You might just find that the tea helps you get past those cravings between meals as well as helps your body burn more energy more efficiently!

Oo-la-la ~ Oolong Peach! Enjoy!

Free Tea Sample Abuse Report!

The www is an astonishing place! The opportunities are amazing, but we are learning that they can also be abused. Much to our dismay, we have learned first hand this past weekend. We are trying to turn this into a positive ~ so here is our solution: Be Silly. Be Strong. Be Yourself!

Be Silly – laughter is contagious. We had to laugh, so we wouldn’t cry. Our customer base grew by over 10,000 in just three days; however, the customers were not purchasing anything, just requesting free samples. How could this have happened?

Be Strong – stand up for what you believe in. We believe that honesty is the best policy, so we are explaining the situation to you! Our hope is that our customers will stand behind us on this one! We offered a free sample on our website for customers seriously interested in our products to have the opportunity to sample one of our teas. We have been doing this successfully for a couple of months. Somehow this weekend, things changed. Without our knowledge or permission, our website was posted by a group of “free deal” sites. We were inundated with so many requests for free samples that we were alarmed. When we figured out what had happened, we changed the website immediately so that potential customers did not feel misled. We are a small business and do not have the resources available to accommodate all of these requests for free samples. We did not intend to be picked up by these “free deal” websites and apologize for the way these websites misused our free sample offer.

Be Yourself – live life with no regrets. Our customers are our top priority. We appreciate you, and it is always our goal to provide excellent customer service. We will gladly provide our customers with a free tea sample with any purchase from our website. We have loved getting to know you – either by meeting you personally at vendor shows or chatting with you via e-mail. We consider you our friends – someone we would love to sit down and have tea with. We love what we do, but we do take it seriously.

Thanks for allowing us to explain our little “situation” ~ we appreciate your continued interest in Steeped in Style!

Tealightfully yours ~ Shellie & Amy

Does your princess have a tea set?

Have you been thinking about buying your little princess her own tea set? My daughter has had one since her first birthday, and, yes, I did let her play with it. Each little chip tells a story and brings back wonderful memories of all of the little tea parties we used to have. Now that she's almost a teenager, she insisted that we give tea sets to my little nieces for Christmas this year. (Her memories must be as precious as mine!)

Anyway, speaking of little princess tea sets, a Steeped in Style friend forwarded us the most adorable little "tea story" and we just had to share it! Here goes ...

One day my mother was out and my dad was in charge. I was maybe one and a half years old. Someone had given me a little 'tea set' as a gift and it was one of my favorite toys.
Daddy was in the living room engrossed in the evening news and my brother was playing nearby in the living room when I brought Daddy a little cup of 'tea', which was just water. After several cups of tea and lots of praise for such yummy tea, my Mom came home. My Dad made her wait in the living room to watch me bring him a cup of tea, because it was 'just the cutest thing! My Mom waited, and sure enough, here I come down the hall with a cup of tea for Daddy and she watches him drink it up, then says, 'Did it ever occur to you that the only place that she can reach to get water is the toilet??' (Author Anonymous)
Thanks Annette for sharing this with us! Hope it brings a smile to everyone!
Doesn't your little princess need her own tea set? Check out all of our children's sets on the website! Have a great weekend ~ Amy

Wanna be a "Tea Girl"? Here's how!

Join the tea awakening! Are you confident enough to break a few rules? Composed without ever being stuffy? Elegant, but in an offhand way? Then you can be a tea girl too!

Don't know how? Steeped in Style is here to help! We offer a wonderful variety of delicious gourmet teas. Not sure how to make loose leaf tea? We have a couple of easy options to get you started. First of all you can use an infuser tea pot - our I-pots are great! Just put the tea in the infuser basket, pour in the water, steep according to the tea directions and Wah lah! Enjoy!!! Another easy option is to use our tea filters, with an easy-fill flap and expanding base, they are as convenient as any normal teabag, but the tea is sooo much better! To use the filters, just measure your tea, spoon it into your tea filter, fold the flap down, and brew your cup (or pot) of tea! Disarmingly simple!

Try the Earl Grey Cream ~ I just had a cup myself! Yummy! An unexpected twist on a traditional favorite. Fragrant oil of bergamot is paired with a hint of vanilla for a flavor that is delicately enhanced and a finish that is intriguingly smooth!

If you have any questions about becoming a tea girl - just visit our website. We would be happy to answer any questions - just click on contact us! Can't wait to hear from you! ~ Amy

Cool, but oh, so hot! Drink your tea iced!

According to the Tea Council of the USA, 83 percent of all tea consumed in America is iced! Try our Ceylon OP for a good old-fashioned glass of iced tea! It is perfect for those who enjoy a robust, flavorful cup and want to experience tea at its best! Smooth, delicious and refreshing!

I just did a "taste test" myself this week! I made a pitcher of iced tea with our Ceylon OP and had my husband try it. Without knowing what type of tea he was drinking - these were his exact words, "WOW! This might be the best iced tea I've ever had - what is it?" Subtle, clean, crisp flavors make our loose leaf teas an unforgettable experience - enlighten your senses, enliven your taste buds and stimulate your mind!

Be Smart~ Tea Revives, Relaxes and Refreshes ~ Drink Up!

Many consider tea more than just a beverage; it is typically noted for its rejuvenating effects – a drink that revives, relaxes and refreshes all at the same time. Recently investigators have been exploring just how tea does this and its potential benefits on mental alertness and physical performance. Studies indicate that drinking a cup of black tea rapidly “revives” by improving mental alertness, and regular consumption of black tea throughout the day (1 cup every 2-3 hours) helps maintain a constant level of mental alertness as well as reduces feelings of fatigue. These effects of tea appear to be not solely due to the caffeine, but to other factors and compounds in tea as well.
Tea comes from Camellia sinensis, the only plant that makes theanine. Unique to tea, theanine is a major amino acid in black, green, and oolong tea. Exciting recent research has shown that theanine may play an important role in the natural gentle stimulatory effects of drinking tea . Several studies have found that L-theanine, the predominate form of theanine found in tea, stimulates alpha-brainwaves which are associated with a relaxed but alert mental state of mind.
Theanine appears to work quickly and seems to be most effective when someone is stressed and the mind is preoccupied by many thoughts. It seems to help relax the mind allowing one to focus on the task at hand. Because theanine helps the mind stop racing it also seems to help promote a more restful, sound sleep because sleep is also not interrupted by random thoughts.

The science of theanine is just developing and it is not known if the effect of theanine is cumulative, but it does appear that the rejuvenating effects of tea on mood, cognitive function and psychomotor performance, that cannot be solely explained by the caffeine in tea, may be in part be due to theanine.

TEA ~ The Natural Cancer Blocker

The antioxidants found in tea--called catechins--may selectively inhibit the growth of cancer. Animal studies suggest that both black and green tea may help prevent or delay formation of certains types of tumors. Tea appears to do this by preventing damage to cells caused by cancer-causing chemicals and by slowing down the growth rate of precancerous cells, as well as by enhancing the body's ability to naturally kill precancerous and cancerous cells. Research has found that tea flavonoids protect cells from damage caused by free radicals and other carcinogens by acting as antioxidants and by helping the body rid itself of carcinogens. Studies also show that the flavonoids in tea help control progression of cancer by maintaining normal cell growth rate and by increasing the natural turnover of precancerous and cancerous cells. Population based studies have associated drinking tea with lower risk for a number of types of cancer.

Boost Your Immune System ~ Drink Tea!

Take frequent TEA breaks this winter, and you may just get through it without a sniffle.

Immunologists at Harvard University discovered that people who drank five cups of black tea a day for 2 weeks transformed their immune system T cells into "Hulk cells" that pumped out 10 times more cold and flu virus-fighting interferon than did the immune systems of those who didn't drink black tea. Green tea should work just as well. (Prevention Magazine, 10/03)

Antioxidants in tea, called flavonoids, help your immune response by acting as anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-bacterial agents. Flavonoids have been shown to fight bacteria and thus improve resistance to infection. Indeed, tea ranks as high or higher than many fruits and vegetables in antioxidant potential - even strawberries and spinach!

Fall in love with TEA ~ For your Heart's Sake!

Better to be deprived of food for three days than tea for one," says a Chinese proverb. Research is showing it may just be true. A Harvard study examined 340 men and women who had suffered heart attacks and compared them to matched control subjects. They found that those who drank a cup or more of Black Tea daily had a 44 percent reduction in the risk of heart attack compared to non-tea drinkers. The study was conducted by Dr. Howard Sesso et al. at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston and published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Cardiovascular research suggest that a diet rich in the antioxidants found in tea is able to prevent heart disease and stoke. Tea has been shown to stimulate the circulatory system, to strengthen the blood vessels and to decrease the cholesterol level in the blood stream - therefore, reducing the risk of heart disease. What more could you ask for in a beverage!

Feeling over stimulated by too many tall lattes and shots of double expresso? Try our Vanilla Chai Spice. Freshly brewed, it delivers the best tasting Chai as it unlocks the black tea and spice flavors immediately upon infusion.
