Be Smart~ Tea Revives, Relaxes and Refreshes ~ Drink Up!

Many consider tea more than just a beverage; it is typically noted for its rejuvenating effects – a drink that revives, relaxes and refreshes all at the same time. Recently investigators have been exploring just how tea does this and its potential benefits on mental alertness and physical performance. Studies indicate that drinking a cup of black tea rapidly “revives” by improving mental alertness, and regular consumption of black tea throughout the day (1 cup every 2-3 hours) helps maintain a constant level of mental alertness as well as reduces feelings of fatigue. These effects of tea appear to be not solely due to the caffeine, but to other factors and compounds in tea as well.
Tea comes from Camellia sinensis, the only plant that makes theanine. Unique to tea, theanine is a major amino acid in black, green, and oolong tea. Exciting recent research has shown that theanine may play an important role in the natural gentle stimulatory effects of drinking tea . Several studies have found that L-theanine, the predominate form of theanine found in tea, stimulates alpha-brainwaves which are associated with a relaxed but alert mental state of mind.
Theanine appears to work quickly and seems to be most effective when someone is stressed and the mind is preoccupied by many thoughts. It seems to help relax the mind allowing one to focus on the task at hand. Because theanine helps the mind stop racing it also seems to help promote a more restful, sound sleep because sleep is also not interrupted by random thoughts.

The science of theanine is just developing and it is not known if the effect of theanine is cumulative, but it does appear that the rejuvenating effects of tea on mood, cognitive function and psychomotor performance, that cannot be solely explained by the caffeine in tea, may be in part be due to theanine.

TEA ~ The Natural Cancer Blocker

The antioxidants found in tea--called catechins--may selectively inhibit the growth of cancer. Animal studies suggest that both black and green tea may help prevent or delay formation of certains types of tumors. Tea appears to do this by preventing damage to cells caused by cancer-causing chemicals and by slowing down the growth rate of precancerous cells, as well as by enhancing the body's ability to naturally kill precancerous and cancerous cells. Research has found that tea flavonoids protect cells from damage caused by free radicals and other carcinogens by acting as antioxidants and by helping the body rid itself of carcinogens. Studies also show that the flavonoids in tea help control progression of cancer by maintaining normal cell growth rate and by increasing the natural turnover of precancerous and cancerous cells. Population based studies have associated drinking tea with lower risk for a number of types of cancer.

Boost Your Immune System ~ Drink Tea!

Take frequent TEA breaks this winter, and you may just get through it without a sniffle.

Immunologists at Harvard University discovered that people who drank five cups of black tea a day for 2 weeks transformed their immune system T cells into "Hulk cells" that pumped out 10 times more cold and flu virus-fighting interferon than did the immune systems of those who didn't drink black tea. Green tea should work just as well. (Prevention Magazine, 10/03)

Antioxidants in tea, called flavonoids, help your immune response by acting as anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-bacterial agents. Flavonoids have been shown to fight bacteria and thus improve resistance to infection. Indeed, tea ranks as high or higher than many fruits and vegetables in antioxidant potential - even strawberries and spinach!

Fall in love with TEA ~ For your Heart's Sake!

Better to be deprived of food for three days than tea for one," says a Chinese proverb. Research is showing it may just be true. A Harvard study examined 340 men and women who had suffered heart attacks and compared them to matched control subjects. They found that those who drank a cup or more of Black Tea daily had a 44 percent reduction in the risk of heart attack compared to non-tea drinkers. The study was conducted by Dr. Howard Sesso et al. at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston and published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Cardiovascular research suggest that a diet rich in the antioxidants found in tea is able to prevent heart disease and stoke. Tea has been shown to stimulate the circulatory system, to strengthen the blood vessels and to decrease the cholesterol level in the blood stream - therefore, reducing the risk of heart disease. What more could you ask for in a beverage!

Feeling over stimulated by too many tall lattes and shots of double expresso? Try our Vanilla Chai Spice. Freshly brewed, it delivers the best tasting Chai as it unlocks the black tea and spice flavors immediately upon infusion.
