TEA ~ 5 CUPS A DAY KEEPS THE SWINE FLU AWAY!

Harness the power of tea! The cold and flu season (whether is be swine flu or the good old fashioned seasonal variety) is definitely upon us. Because your mouth is one of the main entry points, medical research recommends drinking tea and other warm liquids as much as possible. According to Dr. Vinay Goyal, an Intensivist and Thyroid specialist, drinking tea washes off proliferating viruses from the throat and into the stomach where they cannot survive.

Because of its high catechin percentage, tea is especially effective in preventing the flu since the flavonoids help prevent infection and inhibit viruses’ growth and reproduction. While the flu vaccine protects against a particular strain of flu type, catechins can protect again many different types of flu virus.

Whether it's green or black, tea has about to 10 times the polyphenols found in fruits and vegetables, by one estimate. Tea’s antioxidant power is simply astounding. All teas -- green tea, black tea, white tea, oolong tea -- come from the same tea plant, Camellia sinensis. The only difference is how they are processed. White and green tea leaves are not fermented; they are withered and steamed. Oolong and black tea leaves undergo a crushing and fermenting process.

Interestingly enough, tea has different types of antioxidants than fruits and vegetables too. Among those listed on the USDA charts are thearubigins, epicatechins, and catechins. All are considered flavonoids, a type of antioxidant. The charts show that brewed green, white, oolong and black teas have loads of these flavonoids.

To get the most health benefits out of your teas, choose high-quality loose leaf teas from Steeped in Style Teas. Sip, savor, do your body a favor!

Loose Leaf vs. Tea Bags

No contest! Loose leaf is by far the better choice.

Fresh brewed, loose leaf tea has the biggest antioxidant boost. Tea made from loose leaves has more antioxidants than tea bags, which tend to have lower-quality, powered leaves. Just for fun I took a picture of Steeped in Style tea leaves (on left) and tore open a leading tea manufacturer's tea bag ~ tea dust if you may (on right). What you see is what you get! You won't believe how much better the flavor of loose leaf tea is too!

Also watch your water! Chlorine in tap water can lower the antioxidant levels if it is not brought to a full boil first.

If you are going to fuel your body, do it with the best possible tea products. The bottom line is your body will thank you in the long run.

If you are cold ... Tea will warm you!

Brrr... I just heard the weatherman predict 12 inches of snow by tomorrow! I love to see the flakes coming down and cover everything in a beautiful blanket of white, but I hate the cold! I get chilled to the bone and the high of 20 degrees just doesn't make me very happy! If you are anything like me ~ you need to wrap your hands around a nice, hot cup of tea!

A spoonful of leaves and some hot water ~ nothing can replace a cup of tea to warm you up. Mmm ... it warms you to your toes!

William Gladstone said it best back in 1865: “If you are cold, tea will warm you; if you are too heated, it will cool you; if you are depressed, it will cheer you; if you are excited, it will calm you.”

Try English Breakfast, Pomegranate Pear, Chamomile Citrus, Peppermint or another one of our 30 warm, delicious flavors!

Here's to being warm and cozy in January! ~ Amy

Happy New Year Tea with Great Friends and Fabulous Earl Grey Creme

What a delightful way to celebrate the new year! Relaxation, conversation and tea, of course.

I was invited to have tea with a beautiful friend of mine to celebrate the beginning of 2009! She delighted all of us with yummy scones served with lemon curd and homemade raspberry jam, carrot soup, sandwiches, tarts, chicken bites and lemon and chocolate squares. Everything was presented in such an elegant way and was received with such joy - simply melt-in-your-mouth delicious.

Then there was the most important element of High Tea ... the Tea itself! My personal favorite was the Earl Grey Creme - you can see the Steeped in Style tin in the picture! Steeped to perfection! Served in gorgeous teapots and cups and accompanied by sugar and milk ~ if you so desired.

Michele was a fabulous hostess! What a wonderful time with wonderful memories to cherish forever!

Why not host your own tea party! Lunch is too rushed, dinner is too formal ... tea is just right! Want to impress your friends? The High Tea Experience can't be beat. There is a reason High Tea has remained the Queen of Alternative Events for centuries. It is a great to way to relax and connect with friends. Sit back, savor the aroma and flavor of your favorite tea and enjoy yourself! You deserve it!

Brought to you by your friends at Steeped in Style Teas .. of course!

Cheers ~ Amy
